The Gold Industry Group (GIG) commenced its partnership with mental health not-for-profit LIVIN in 2017, to raise awareness of mental health and change the way the industry and society understands, perceives and interprets mental illness.

2019 Tour

The GIG in partnership with LIVIN embarked on a national tour in March and April to bring LIVINWell workshops to member offices, mine sites, schools and the wider community across Australia in an effort to help break the stigma often associated with mental illness.

Delivering more than 50 LIVINWell workshops across Australia in March and April, we reached more than 1400 people and as a result, the tour is set to be extended.

Visiting member offices and sites, as well as local schools and the community, the relatable sessions sharing lived experience and practical tips have received overwhelming positive feedback. Spreading the message that #itaintweaktospeak has commenced a movement within mining to speak up.

Since establishing a partnership in 2017, the GIG and LIVIN seek to connect, support and empower gold industry workers, their families, friends and members of their local community to speak up, seek help and help others.

With a report undertaken by the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia recommending ongoing mental health support programs and wellbeing initiatives to dramatically reduce the shame affiliated with psychological challenges, the GIG’s collaboration with LIVIN continues to grow.

Proceeds from the GIG LIVIN tour will go towards the delivery of mental health education for young people in schools across the country via LIVIN’s school program.

The LIVINWell program is delivered by personable facilitators with experience and mental health training, providing people with the basic tools to seek help, help others and champion the message ‘It Aint Weak to Speak’.

GIG member companies who supported the national tour include Gold Fields, Gold Road Resources, AngloGold Ashanti Australia, Evolution Mining, the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, The Perth Mint, Norton Gold Fields and ABC Refinery.

The GIG was the major sponsors of the LIVIN Charity Ball and brought LIVIN to the 2019 Mining and Emergency Response Competition in Perth.

If you are suffering from a mental illness or know someone who is, contact your local GP for a mental health plan or use one of the many services listed on the LIVIN website or download our flyer.

2017 Tour

In June 2017, the Gold Industry Group held member and community workshops in Perth and Kalgoorlie with LIVIN founders Sam Webb and Casey Lyons, to break down the stigma attached to mental illness and give people the basic tools to seek help and help others.

The GIG also collaborated with City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder to produce a short film, where the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Youth Council interviewed LIVIN founders who shared a message of strength to the young people of the Goldfields.

This short film was screened for the first time at the 2017 Mental Health Week WA Opening Ceremony held in Kalgoorlie and has played been played throughout schools in region.

In 2017, an audit conducted by the Department of Mines and Petroleum into the psychosocial harms in the mining and resources industry found the most significant area identified for improvement was the level of consultation with the workforce on mental health and wellbeing strategies.

With one in five people suffering from some form of mental illness and suicide the biggest killer of Australians aged 15-44, this issue requires the community to work together to support each other and change perceptions.

LIVIN was co-founded by Sam Webb and Casey Lyons in September 2013, in loving memory of good mate Dwayne Lally who took his own life after suffering in silence from a mental illness.

The core of LIVIN’s mission is the mantra 'It Ain’t Weak to Speak,' encouraging and inspiring people to speak up and seek help. Through education and the use of fashion, social media and well known personalities, LIVIN influences generational change with a fresh approach to mental health.
