Goldfields shines at WASMA ball

All that glittered was gold on Saturday night at the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Racing Club, as another year of graduates from the WA School of Mines were celebrated amongst 450 industry representatives at their annual Alumni Ball.

Traditionally held in Perth, hosting the ball for the first time in the Goldfields was the brainchild of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s Mayor John Bowler, who wished to align it with the City’s celebration of 125 years since gold was first discovered in the area.

The Gold Industry Group (GIG) goes from strength to strength welcoming AngloGold Ashanti Australia’s Vice President for Corporate Affairs, Community and Human Resources, Andrea Maxey and Gold Road Resources’ General Manager for Capability and Culture, Stuart Jenner, to its Board of Directors.

Both Ms Maxey and Mr Jenner bring a new level of diversity to the Board, with varied backgrounds, different roles and new skills.

St Barbara is leading the way for gender equality in mining after receiving the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) ‘Employer of Choice for Gender Equality’ citation for the fourth consecutive year.

With St Barbara Managing Director and CEO Bob Vassie a WGEA Pay Equity Ambassador since 2014, this latest citation confirms the Company’s commitment to addressing pay equity and ensuring gender equality in recruitment, promotions and reward and recognition.

Northern Star Resources Limited has recently expanded its highly successful fee for service (FFS) Aboriginal Ranger employment program to its Kalgoorlie operations. 

Operating at the Company’s Jundee mine since 2012, the Ranger FFS model engages Aboriginal people as environmental experts and to provide core environmental compliance services to Northern Star mining and exploration programs.

Great debate to put gender diversity under spotlight

Tonight, the Gold Industry Group will host its second Women in Gold Sundowner at The Perth Mint in conjunction with Women in Mining WA, this year putting diversity under the spotlight with a great debate in front of more than 300 guests. 

Inspired by Catherine Fox’s book Stop Fixing Women, the debate will see a diverse powerhouse panel of industry figures battle it out over whether we need to stop fixing women and start fixing the system to achieve gender equality in the workplace.

One of the gold industry's up-and-coming leaders, Cassie O’Connell, works as Senior Human Resources Advisor at Gold Fields’ Agnew gold mine in Western Australia and will soon be making the case for a ’transformed system‘ to eliminate gender inequality in mining.  

Cassie will be one of the panellists at the Gold Industry Group's Women in Gold Great Debate this Friday night at The Perth Mint.

The Gold Industry Group is thrilled to partner with the WA School of Mines Alumni to support diversity within the school and the wider industry.

Last night WA School of Mines Alumni President Bill Beament announced the recipient of the Gold Industry Group's Diversity Scholarship, Sarah Arnoldi, at their event with Women in Mining WA at Diggers and Dealers in Kalgoorlie.

The WA Mining Club are offering seven $10,000 scholarships to WA university students studying a degree in a mining discipline. 

Students studying engineering, geology, metallurgy, environmental science, biology and similar technical disciplines are eligible to enter. Students are welcome to apply for more than one scholarship.

Gold Fields provides $50k to launch regional Indigenous health program

Gold Fields Australia’s dedicated Foundation has today provided $50,000 to the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation to fund the first stage of building a facial analysis database of Indigenous children’s faces from the Goldfields region.

Chairman of the Gold Fields Australia Foundation Alex Munt explained the importance of this program which will enable a significant number of medical conditions and diseases to be diagnosed through facial analysis.
