NAIDOC Netball Carnival celebrates culture

The Gold Industry Group (GIG) backed NAIDOC Netball Carnival reached new heights this year, celebrating Indigenous culture and achievement, in every facet of the day.

A special welcome by Glenda Kickett was followed by an Indigenous Dance by Mandurah Grassroots to mark the official opening at the Wembley Sports Park yesterday. Australia’s largest Indigenous netball carnival then came to life and in the hands of every player with a bespoke ball designed by the talented Shontae Jetta, Narrogin Aboriginal Grassroots Site and Shooting Stars participant.

Golden job opportunities were amongst those showcased at Get Into Resources last month, giving students a unique opportunity to explore career opportunities and study pathways within the resources industry.

Held over three days at the North Metropolitan TAFE’s campus in Northbridge, Get Into Resources saw almost 400 year 10 students from 13 schools across Western Australia attend the careers event.

Held within the grounds of Hannans North Tourist Mine in Kalgoorlie on Saturday 29 June, the open day saw 3 500 locals, families, tourists and employees alike don their best high vis clothing and join in the celebrations.

Located east of Laverton in Western Australia, the Gruyere Gold Project is a joint venture between Gold Road Resources and Gold Fields, which is expected to operate for the next 12 years and create 350 full time jobs.

Six Newcrest Mining Limited employees banded together to embark on an epic 2,246 km bike ride from their Perth office to the Telfer operations, raising awareness and funds for mental health.

Funds raised went to the WA Disabled Sports Association and Beyond Blue, helping to make a difference in the lives of those affected by anxiety, depression or suicide.

Some of Australia’s finest runners descended on the small outback town of Leonora for the mining community’s annual Golden Gift carnival, sponsored by St Barbara Limited, Saracen Mineral Holdings and Gold Fields.

Held 31 May to 3 June, the 2019 event included an art prize, fashions on the field, live music, food and market stalls, fireworks and the main attraction of the coveted road mile title and it’s $50,000 prize.

Gold Fields' Agnew gold mine powers ahead with renewables

Gold Fields’ Agnew gold mine in Western Australia will become one of Australia’s first mining operations to be predominantly powered by renewable and low-carbon energy.

Gold Fields and global energy group EDL today announced a A$112m investment in a world-leading energy microgrid combining wind, solar, gas and battery storage. The microgrid will be owned and operated by EDL, which will recoup its investment via a 10-year electricity supply agreement with Agnew.

Swick Mining recently sat down with George Horsham, a rugby-mad former diamond driller, to discover what it was like to work on Australian mine sites during the 1950s and 1960s.

Diamond core drilling has advanced in leaps and bounds since then. Technology advancements mean state-of-the-art rigs today allow hole set-ups to be completed within minutes instead of hours, and moves carried out within hours not days.

Members put their life saving skills to the test during a weekend of challenges at the 2019 Chamber of Minerals and Energy (CME) Surface Mine Emergency Response Competition, held over 25 and 26 May at Hannans North Tourist Mine.

Competing teams included: KCGM, Gold Fields (Combined), St Barbara Limited (Leonora), Evolution Mining (Mungari), Northern Star Resources, Saracen Mineral Holdings (Carosue Dam) and BHP (Northern Operations).

Gold workers join LIVINWell movement

The Gold Industry Group (GIG)’s recent mental health tour with charity LIVIN is being hailed a success after more than 40 stigma breaking workshops were delivered across Australia reaching more than 1,200 gold industry workers, locals and students.

As a result of the resounding positive feedback from attendees, the tour has been extended with more workshops to be delivered at gold mine sites in June and a school tour is being explored for 2020.
