Securing a foodbank for WA during COVID-19

Foodbank WA is one of three essential Western Australian community organisations to receive part of the $9.1 million in funding from WA resources companies, as part of the COVID-19 Community Support Initiative set up by the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia.

Foodbank WA’s key response to the impacts of the coronavirus was to provide Emergency Food Relief hampers to those struggling the most.

Newcrest backs new Australian-made ventilator to combat COVID-19

Newcrest Mining Limited has joined the effort to boost Australian manufacturing and tackle COVID-19, by contributing A$200,000 to the production of a new low-cost Australian-made ventilator.

The OzVader ventilator prototype, which has been developed by Australian company Olitek, is in the final stages of performance and validation testing. Olitek is seeking Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration exemption to manufacture and supply the ventilator.

Newcrest partners with university for COVID-19 vaccine

Newcrest Mining Limited has announced a A$1 million contribution to support cutting edge COVID-19 vaccine research in partnership with the University of Queensland (‘UQ’).

The funding has been made by Newcrest as part of its recently launched A$20 million Community Support Fund and will be specifically deployed to support UQ’s ground-breaking ‘molecular clamp’ technique to develop a vaccine for COVID-19.

Resources sector funds COVID-19 research

The Western Australian resources sector will provide half a million dollars to fund a COVID-19 population study which will undertake wide-scale asymptomatic testing of FIFO workers.

The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia and its members have been working with the WA Government on the DETECT (Defining and Monitoring the Prevalence of SARS CoV2 (COVID-19) in the Community) program, which is focusing on testing targeted cohorts such as students, teachers, health care workers and police.

Lifeline WA will ensure that the 13 11 14 service is available to all Western Australians throughout the course of COVID-19.

Resources sector donates millions to community

Gold miners have joined with the resources sector in Western Australia to donate more than $9 million to the Royal Flying Doctors Service, Foodbank and Lifeline.

The COVID-19 Community Support Initiative set up by the CMEWA, has so far received much needed funds from Gold Industry Group members AngloGold Ashanti Australia, Gold Fields, Gold Road Resources, Newcrest Mining, Newmont Australia, Northern Star Resources, Ramelius Resources, Regis Resources and Saracen Mineral Holdings.

Delivery of the Gold Industry Group's gold sessions and Gold Resources Kits as part of its National Gold Education Program will be postponed until Term 3 2020 in response to the national situation regarding novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19), ensuring the safety of both industry facilitators and participating schools across Australia.

Gold shines at emergency response competition

The stage was swept by Newmont Goldcorp Australia and Anglogold Ashanti Australia emergency response teams at the 9th annual MERC’s presentation night, taking out overall second and third places along with several scenario wins and the Best Medic award.

As the MERC’s chosen Industry Partner, the Gold Industry Group proudly supported the 2019 Mining Emergency Response Competition (MERC) alongside two gold mining teams and 12 others from across Western Australia including one from Indonesia, as they competed at Langley Park in Perth from 22 to 24 November.

The Gold Industry Group (GIG) is proud to be the Industry Partner of the ninth annual Mining and Emergency Response Competition, held in Perth from 22 to 24 November 2019.

The GIG will provide two free mental health workshops, courtesy of community partner LIVIN, to almost 200 emergency response personnel, event marshals and volunteers.
