Perth Mint representatives Che Wyatt and Riaana Raywood recently attended the highly successful 'STEM Speedy High Tea' event aimed at inspiring and engaging Year 9 and 10 students.

The event, held on Tuesday, May 30th at Ashdale Secondary College proved to be an exceptional opportunity for students to explore STEM-based subjects and potential career paths in the Gold Industry.

The 'STEM Speedy High Tea' event featured representatives from various STEM careers who generously shared their knowledge and experiences with the students. These professionals served as Industry Mentors and engaged in meaningful conversations with the young attendees. Students had the opportunity to learn about different STEM careers and were encouraged to ask questions related to their areas of interest.

The event's format was designed to maximize interaction and engagement. Industry Mentors introduced themselves and their careers to the students in attendance before sitting at individual tables, each accommodating 8-10 students.

Over the course of 5-minute timeslots, the mentors rotated through each table, providing valuable insights into their specific careers and industries. This arrangement allowed all students present to benefit from the diverse expertise and perspectives of the Industry Mentors.

The event was not only informative but also provided a unique networking opportunity for the students. They were also able to establish connections with professionals in their fields of interest, expanding their understanding of the real-world applications within the industry.

Perth Mint’s Diversity and Inclusion Officer Riaana Raywood said the event was an extremely valuable experience not only for the students but for the industry mentors as well.

“The event went really well, and the students were very engaged. We were the only team that was not representative of a STEM career path but, I think it gave the students a bit of variety,” she said.

“They were able to learn about roles in the gold industry that they didn’t know existed and new career paths for the future.

“Che and I learnt a lot on the day as well. We were surrounded by some very high achievers.”
