More than 30 emergency responders from Northern Star Resources, Gold Fields, Ramelius Resources and Westgold Resources put their lifesaving skills on show in eight realistic scenarios at the 11th annual Mining and Emergency Response Competition (MERC).
Northern Star Resources and the Gold Industry Group (GIG) were proud sponsors again of the free event at Langley Park Perth, from 26 to 28 November 2021, attracting hundreds of local spectators to witness the action and participate in the fun free activities on offer. The event theme, diversity and inclusion, was celebrated by the first ever all-female team from Gold Fields.
Since the gold rushes of the 1850s Australia’s gold industry has been making a vital contribution to the country’s economic prosperity, generating wealth and underpinning global production. Moreover it is the lifeblood of many regional communities, creating jobs and educational opportunities, while providing vital infrastructure and boosting tourism.
Northern Star Resources has joined Saracen Mineral Holdings in making the Kalgoorlie Super Pit a wholly Australian-owned gold mine, with the announcement to acquire 50% from Newmont Goldcorp Australia for USD $800 million.
The purchase will deliver Northern Star a half-share of one of the most significant gold systems in the world.
Australia’s gold exports are forecast to hit a record high of AUD $25 billion in 2019-20 according to the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science’s September edition of Resources and Energy Quarterly (REQ).
The September REQ shows Australia remains the world’s second largest producer of gold, with production increasing by 6.3% in FY 2018–19 to 321 tonnes, equating to 9% of the world’s total supply in 2018.
Hundreds descended on Langley Park in Perth over the weekend as AngloGold Ashanti, Newmont Australia and Northern Star Resources’ emergency response teams battled it out with 15 other teams to win the 8th annual Mining Emergency Response Competition (MERC).
