Newcrest creates $20 million Community Support Fund

Newcrest Mining Limited has established a global A$20 million Community Support Fund to provide financial assistance to its host communities to help them face the challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Australia, a portion of the fund will be directed to the Orange, Blayney and Cabonne regions in New South Wales and the Telfer region in Western Australia.

Newcrest honour Martu worker

A significant new symbol of the ever-growing and closer relationships between Newcrest Mining and the Martu people was celebrated at the company’s Telfer gold mine, with the official opening of the Kevin Fred Room.

Named after Martu elder Kevin Fred, it is the first of any building at Telfer named to honour an individual, and recognises the 16-year period in which Kevin worked tirelessly to strengthen relationships and trust between Newcrest and the Martu people.

Martu footballers fly high at Optus Stadium

On July 12, Newcrest Mining supported 70 young Martu men to participate in a curtain raiser football match at Perth’s Optus Stadium prior to The AFL Grand Final rematch between Collingwood and the West Coast Eagles.

The young Martu players and support staff travelled several thousand kilometres to Perth from various remote communities in the Pilbara region of WA.

Jonah Bennett has shown Newcrest colleagues he’s ready to accept his latest challenge, as Telfer’s first Martu apprentice. Jonah is from the Bidyadanga community, located on the Kimberley coast, and first began working for Newcrest at the Telfer site in late 2015.
