KCGM’s latest Safety Innovation Award recipients have chosen to donate their wins to three local organisations: Full Circle, Goldfields Women’s Refuge and the Headspace Kalgoorlie branch.

The three award winners for this quarter were Matthew Adams from Open Pit Mining, Kate Scolyer and Kevin Barry from Processing and the Mount Charlotte Underground Operational Supervisors.

Swick Mining recently sat down with George Horsham, a rugby-mad former diamond driller, to discover what it was like to work on Australian mine sites during the 1950s and 1960s.

Diamond core drilling has advanced in leaps and bounds since then. Technology advancements mean state-of-the-art rigs today allow hole set-ups to be completed within minutes instead of hours, and moves carried out within hours not days.

Joint venture partners AngloGold Ashanti Australia and Independence Group NL are set for a big year ahead, with recent approval for the $105.7 million underground expansion of their existing Tropicana gold mine in Western Australia’s Goldfields region.

The firing of the first blast for the portal at Boston Shaker took place on 8 May.

Kirkland scoops mine rescue win

Maintaining their stellar year of award wins, the Kirkland Lake Gold Fosterville team took home four awards at this year’s Victorian Mines Rescue Competition (VMRC) including the overall win.

Held over 12 – 14 October and hosted by Kirkland Lake Gold at their Fosterville Gold Mine 20km outside of Bendigo, the 26th VMRC saw nine mines rescue and emergency response teams (ERT) compete.
