West Coast Fever shine a light on Narrogin’s Shooting Stars

West Coast Fever shine a light on Narrogin’s Shooting Stars

December 22, 2020
by Gold Industry Group

West Coast Fever players teamed up with Netball WA’s charity, Shooting Stars, to share impacts of the Program and the importance of positive role models for Indigenous girls, through a series of inspirational TV advertisements and video stories.

Filmed with Shooting Stars participants at Narrogin Senior High School, the television advertisements and engaging video stories highlight the real change being made by the Program in some of Western Australia’s most remote communities.

As Premier Partner of Shooting Stars, the Gold Industry Group is proud to help the Program create strong, powerful, and confident women by using netball and other tools as vehicles to drive greater engagement and attendance at school.

“The value of the Shooting Stars Program to the girls is feeling valued, feeling loved, and knowing that they belong and having that identity. It’s having that positive mindset in school and then taking that home, to their families and to the communities – making positive choices,” said Shooting Stars Program Co-ordinator Tiresa Foai.

West Coast Fever Captain Courtney Bruce and fellow teammate Verity Charles are Shooting Stars Ambassadors, regularly visiting the Program’s participants across eight sites in Western Australia to help support them through their schooling journey.

They said the vehicle of engaging participants in sport allowed the Shooting Stars to truly shine, with the girls bringing that energy and teamwork back into the classroom.

“When the girls come to class they get to engage in great activities, get to play netball, and 80% of these girls do so attendance is skyrocketing. We empower these girls out on the court, and they take it back into the classroom,” said Charles.

“This Program is all about getting girls to shine at school and in life. The Program is driving genuine change,” said Bruce.

Shooting Stars is an initiative of Netball WA and Glass Jar Australia and provides opportunities for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls to succeed in life both on and off the netball court, with participants and staff developing leadership skills.

The Gold Industry Group is proud to support netball in Western Australia as the Premier Partner of Shooting Stars, and the Principal Partner of West Coast Fever and Netball WA, thanks to support from member champions Gold Fields, Northern Star Resources, Saracen Mineral Holdings, Newcrest Mining, St Barbara Limited, AngloGold Ashanti Australia, Newmont Australia, Gold Road Resources, Ramelius Resources and The Perth Mint.
