As the Principal Partner of Netball WA, the Gold Industry Group launched a dress design competition at the Netball WA’s NAIDOC Netball Carnival last year which saw Lakkari’s design selected amongst hundreds of entries.

The design used creativity to showcase the importance of Aboriginal culture, gold and netball to the designer.

Year 7 participant, Lakkari, said she was proud to have her culture showcased on dresses for her netball team.

“I wanted my design to showcase my Aboriginal culture because it’s very special and important to me,” said Lakkari.

“The red represents the land, black represents the people, gold represents the sun and light blue and dark blue represents the water.”

Gold Industry Group Executive Officer Rebecca Johnston was thrilled to see Lakkari’s beautiful design come to life.

“The Gold Industry Group is delighted to support the annual NAIDOC Netball Carnival and help strengthen the cultural identities of young Indigenous peoples through the event and design competition.

“Congratulations to Lakkari for creating such an amazing design showcasing Aboriginal culture that was also proudly worn by a national men’s team in their pre-season games against the West Coast Fever in Kalgoorlie earlier this year,” Ms Johnston said.

Not only did Lakkari win the opportunity to display her culture for her netball team, but at the elite level on the singlets of the national male side who took on West Coast Fever in two pre-season matches in front of thousands of spectators in Kalgoorlie, supported by the Gold Industry Group in conjunction with the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

One of Shooting Stars’ Aboriginal Suppliers, Jilalga Designs, supported the production of the dress, creating a digitised version of Lakkari’s design so it could be printed onto netball dresses.

Netball WA’s NAIDOC Netball Carnival was scheduled this week and has been rescheduled to 7 November due to COVID restrictions.
