This year’s Diggers & Dealers was as good as gold as 2450 delegates descended on Kalgoorlie for mining’s biggest industry event.
Former Australian Prime Minister John Howard was a hit, gold shone throughout the three day program with GIG Directors Andrea Maxey and Stuart Tonkin taking to the stage, a focus on the image of mining created much discussion at our popular breakfast event with Deloitte, and Northern Star Resources claimed dealer of the year.
The Gold Industry Group closed the year with the announcement of three additional new Directors at yesterday’s Annual General Meeting.
Evolution Mining Group Manager External and Indigenous Relations Anika McManus, Newmont Australia Group Executive Sustainability and External Relations Kenneth Ramsey, and Newcrest Mining Manager External Affairs and Social Performance Ben Bryant were welcomed to the diverse leadership team.
Presenting to a crowd of 500 West Australian Mining Club members in May, Stuart Tonkin, Chief Executive Officer Northern Star Resources, began by ensuring their view of the gold industry’s future was seen through rose-coloured glasses.
As CEO of one of Australia’s largest gold producers and a Director on the Gold Industry Group Board, Stuart said future proofing the gold sector through investment in exploration was key to staying steady and maintaining current production levels.
Gold industry leader and Northern Star Resources Chief Executive Officer Stuart Tonkin joined the Gold Industry Group Board of Directors last week as he looks forward to working alongside the experienced team to grow the Group.
“There is a great opportunity to tell our story and show our support for the community as an industry. The gold industry is a significant contributor to the socio and economic fabric of our country and we often don’t tell our story as well as some of the other resource sectors,” Mr Tonkin said.
Northern Star Resources, KCGM and Newmont Boddington Gold were all finalists in the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) 2017 Community Partnership Awards for successfully forming meaningful relationships and enduring outcomes for communities.
Insights from these programs were shared at the 2017 Awards for Excellence seminar late last year and are now available online.
Northern Star Resources was the overall winner at the Mining Emergency Response Competition (MERC) on the weekend with their Jundee Team the stand out against 15 teams over two days in seven events.
MERC was held at Langley Park with emergency response teams participating in simulated events covering all disciplines; first aid, confined space, firefighting, hazardous material response, vertical rescue, road crash rescue and emergency response team readiness.
