The Gold Industry Group (GIG)’s recent mental health tour with charity LIVIN is being hailed a success after more than 40 stigma breaking workshops were delivered across Australia reaching more than 1,200 gold industry workers, locals and students.
As a result of the resounding positive feedback from attendees, the tour has been extended with more workshops to be delivered at gold mine sites in June and a school tour is being explored for 2020.
The Australian mining industry could be heading towards a healthy stage of growth, however there remains the need for skilled workers.
The industry’s future will rely on an efficient, skilled and suitably sized workforce - and focus is shifting to the next generation of workers to rise to that challenge.
Gold Road Resources’ People & Culture Business Partner Samantha Ware urged delegates at Future of Mining Australia to consider the importance of attracting ‘millennials’ to the mining industry and provided strategies to retain the next generation.
Ms Ware used her own experiences as guidance backed by current research.
The Gold Industry Group recently spoke with diversity scholarship recipient and geologist, Sarah Arnoldi, one year on since discussing her honours thesis, following her journey into her first role as a geologist at Newmont’s Tanami gold mine in the Northern Territory.
The Gold Industry Group in partnership with not-for-profit LIVIN will commence a national tour next month to bring LIVINWell workshops to member offices, mine sites, schools and the wider community across Australia, in an effort to help break the stigma traditionally associated with mental illness.
