Feedback from the Gold Industry Group backed Australian Earth Science Education program in New South Wales has been fantastic since its launch in May, with the program delivering much needed support to teachers and secondary school students through free services, training and resources.

Since the Program began, the website has launched providing a host of new Earth and Environmental Science materials tailored to the Australian Curriculum, including classroom activities, case studies, videos and articles.

Western Australian mining and exploration company, IGO Limited (IGO), has pledged $250,000 to support the Esperance and Dundas Shires with their COVID-19 and bushfire recovery plans.

The funding will provide vital support to the Shire of Esperance’s COVID-19 Community Recovery Plan and the Shire of Dundas’ Bushfire Recovery Plan to help ensure the local communities in which IGO operates are supported during this challenging time.

Landmark hybrid renewable project powers up at Agnew

EDL has switched on its 23MW power station that integrates photovoltaic solar with gas and diesel generation to power Gold Fields’ Agnew Gold Mine, completing the first stage of one of Australia’s largest hybrid renewable microgrid projects.

EDL CEO James Harman and Gold Fields Executive Vice President: Australasia, Stuart Mathews, welcomed Western Australia Minister for Mines and Petroleum, Energy and Industrial Relations, Bill Johnston, to the site this week to officially open Stage 1.

Gold Fields' Agnew gold mine powers ahead with renewables

Gold Fields’ Agnew gold mine in Western Australia will become one of Australia’s first mining operations to be predominantly powered by renewable and low-carbon energy.

Gold Fields and global energy group EDL today announced a A$112m investment in a world-leading energy microgrid combining wind, solar, gas and battery storage. The microgrid will be owned and operated by EDL, which will recoup its investment via a 10-year electricity supply agreement with Agnew.

A new geological field guide to Kalgoorlie and surrounds, produced by Earth Science Western Australia, John Bunting and Peter Muhling; was launched Tuesday 19 March at the Australian Resources Research Centre.

A Geological Field Guide to Kalgoorlie and Surrounds, is the third of its kind in Western Australia, with previous books showcasing Perth and surrounds and the Capes region of the Southwest respectively.

Evolution champions environmental rehabilitation pilot program

Evolution Mining has partnered with NQ Dry Tropics (NQDT) to pilot an innovative Environmental Enhancement project, aimed at re-establishing an open body of water and restoring its fauna diversity.

By removing 15 hectares of aquatic weeds within the Kalamia Creek wetlands in Ayr, North Queensland, the project will explore how to prevent their continued spread, and how those weeds can then be harvested, transported to a local landholder and turned into compost, with the resulting organic matter used to improve local agricultural soils and benefit farm productivity.

Northern Star Resources Limited has recently expanded its highly successful fee for service (FFS) Aboriginal Ranger employment program to its Kalgoorlie operations. 

Operating at the Company’s Jundee mine since 2012, the Ranger FFS model engages Aboriginal people as environmental experts and to provide core environmental compliance services to Northern Star mining and exploration programs.

Conflict minerals, which can include gold ore, are smuggled out of countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and parts of Afghanistan, Columbia, and Zimbabwe, and shipped to smelters around the world for refinement.
