Gold Industry Group partners with Netball WA for gold scholarship

July 20, 2020
by Gold Industry Group

The Gold Industry Group and Netball WA continue to join forces on providing exceptional educational pathways for women, with applications now open for the next round of the 2020 scholarship to assist student netballers in the pursuit of a career in Australia’s gold mining industry.

The ‘Netball WA Sports Excellence Scholarship in Netball’ at the University of Western Australia (UWA), has been made possible through the Gold Industry Group’s ongoing support of Netball WA as Principal Partner.

The scholarship will financially assist and encourage high-performing student athletes in netball, with an interest in a career in the gold industry, to undertake an undergraduate qualification at UWA covering a diverse range of roles in the gold industry.

The selection process for the annual scholarship is based upon academic achievement and athletic performance, with the best applicant demonstrating a keen pursuit in the gold sector.

Netball WA CEO Simon Taylor said the initiative is another example of the sport’s commitment to creating opportunities for girls and women, and as one of the core objectives of the sport’s landmark partnership with the Gold Industry Group.

“The Netball WA Sports Excellence Scholarship in Netball provides an opportunity for netballers in our State with an interest in gold mining to pursue further educational opportunities,” said Mr Taylor.

“As part of our vision of advancing communities, we are proud to be able to create an opportunity that promotes a pathway for women into education, and ultimately into leadership roles within their respective communities.

“We thank the Gold Industry Group and the University of Western Australia for making this possible,” he concluded.

Gold Industry Group Vice-Chair Kelly Carter is thrilled to join with Netball WA and UWA in supporting a new pathway for future leaders in Australia’s gold sector.

“Australia’s gold industry offers a diverse range of career pathways and we are delighted to partner with Netball WA and UWA to assist students to pursue both their higher education and on-court goals.

“We see the range of benefits that a commitment to sport brings to health, wellbeing and performance, so we are delighted to provide this opportunity for our future industry leaders.” Ms Carter said.

The education initiative comes following the launch of the Gold Industry Group’s Gold Jobs website in May and their National Gold Education Program in February.

Australia’s gold industry offers a wide range of employment opportunities across fields including technology, innovation, engineering, geology, exploration, manufacturing, transport, operations, health and safety, environment, sustainability, community, tourism, finance, craftsmanship, management and more.

Applications close Saturday 31 October 2020. Submissions can be entered via the website.

The Gold Industry Group is proud to support netball in Western Australia, as the Principal Partner of Netball WA, Principal Partner of West Coast Fever and Premier Partner of Shooting Stars; thanks to members Gold Fields, Northern Star Resources, Saracen Mineral Holdings, Newcrest Mining, St Barbara Limited, Newmont Australia, AngloGold Ashanti Australia, Gold Road Resources, Ramelius Resources and The Perth Mint.
